Morocco’s Brahim Diaz faces fitness test before Lesotho meeting

Brahim Diaz’s injury has been described as not serious by Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, although the Real Madrid player remains a doubt for Monday’s match against Lesotho.

Diaz missed Morocco’s 2-0 win over Gabon after experiencing pain before kick-off, but stayed with the Atlas Lions in the hope of returning quickly. He has since undergone medical examinations, including an MRI scan, with the results providing reassurance.

Speaking at a news conference after the victory, Ouahbi said the attacking midfielder would continue to receive treatment as Morocco assess whether he can feature in their next game.

“Brahim Diaz has an injury which is not serious, and we will continue his treatment in the hope of recovering him as quickly as possible, incha Allah,” said Ouahbi.

Diaz had already been feeling discomfort when he joined up with the national team. As a precaution, Ouahbi called up Ilias Akhomach to provide additional cover.

Rather than returning to Real Madrid, Diaz chose to remain with the Morocco squad and continue his treatment under the supervision of the national team’s medical staff. He will be assessed again before a decision is made on his availability.

Morocco play Lesotho on Monday 29 September in South Africa, only three days after their opening victory against Gabon. Ouahbi has not guaranteed Diaz will be involved, and the player is unlikely to be risked unless he is considered fully ready.

However, his absence against the Panthers does not appear to indicate a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The latest update suggests Morocco may still have their number 10 available during the international window.

Morocco began their campaign strongly despite Diaz’s omission. Noussair Mazraoui and Soufiane Rahimi scored the goals against Gabon, while several young players were given valuable playing time.

Among them were Ali Maamar, Yassir Zabiri and Abdellah Ouazane. The 17-year-old Ouazane also helped create Morocco’s second goal just minutes after making his international debut.

The match was another step in Ouahbi’s gradual reshaping of the squad. The coach has reiterated his intention to give opportunities to younger players while building a team capable of competing for titles.

For Diaz, the immediate focus is on continuing his treatment and waiting for medical clearance. His participation against Lesotho remains possible, but will depend on how the injury develops over the coming days.

The initial assessment from Ouahbi, however, has eased concerns over the Real Madrid player’s condition.
