Mike Dean responds after revealing unusual refereeing challenges in Premier League matches

Mike Dean has addressed the criticism he received after revealing that referees sometimes set themselves informal challenges during Premier League matches.

Dean, who took charge of 560 games as a lead referee in the English top flight, recently surprised football supporters by describing the mini-competitions officials could create for themselves while a game was in progress.

Among the examples he gave was a challenge to see how long a referee could go without blowing the whistle. Another involved attempting to remain inside the centre circle for as long as possible.

The comments prompted a negative reaction from fans, many of whom questioned whether such behaviour could be regarded as professional during a competitive football match. Dean has now offered a further comment on the issue, saying: “I said inappropriate things.”

His remarks have drawn attention because they relate to the way referees approach matches when they are not making an obvious decision or directly intervening in play. The examples described by Dean were presented as informal contests among officials rather than as part of any recognised refereeing procedure.

The former referee’s comments have therefore led supporters to examine the standards expected of match officials in the Premier League. Fans who criticised Dean argued that referees should remain focused entirely on the match, rather than treating aspects of their work as private tests between themselves.

Dean’s initial revelation concerned actions taking place during matches, with the suggested challenges focused on the use of the whistle and movement around the pitch. He did not describe them as official competitions or rules applied by the Premier League. Instead, they were presented as mini-contests that referees could arrange for themselves while carrying out their duties.

The former official has since acknowledged that his choice of words was inappropriate. His latest comment does not change the information he previously shared, but it represents a response to the criticism that followed.

Dean’s long career in the Premier League has given his remarks particular interest among supporters. Having officiated 560 matches as the main referee, he has extensive experience of working at the highest level of English football. His account nevertheless surprised fans, who said the behaviour he described did not appear consistent with the professional image expected from referees.
