Messi moves within 49 goals of Ronaldo after scoring in Inter Miami draw

Lionel Messi scored his 75th direct free-kick goal as Inter Miami drew 2-2 with San Diego in Major League Soccer, taking his career total to 930 goals.

San Diego took the lead in the 12th minute when Dreyer found the net. Messi levelled 11 minutes later with a free-kick, reaching another landmark in his career.

Inter Miami then turned the match around in the second half. Luis Suarez put them in front in the 75th minute after being set up by Rodrigo De Paul.

The lead lasted only seven minutes, however, as Dreyer scored again to complete his double and secure a 2-2 draw.

The result leaves Inter Miami on 46 points, level with New England Revolution. They are 11 points behind Nashville in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer.

San Diego are 10th in the Western Conference on 31 points, just outside the play-off places.

Messi’s latest goal leaves him 49 behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 979 times in his career.

The Portuguese forward, who plays for Al-Nassr, will continue representing his national team. Messi, in contrast, has already announced that he will retire after Argentina’s next three friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin.
