Mauritania’s Koita, Camara and Diallo complete 3-1 CAN 2027 qualifying win

Mauritania began their CAN 2027 qualifying campaign with a 3-1 victory over the Central African Republic in Casablanca on Thursday.

The Mourabitounes made a slow start, but gradually took control of possession as Aritz Lopez Garai’s side grew into the match. Their pressure was rewarded shortly after the half-hour mark when Aboubakary Koita opened the scoring.

Mauritania built confidence after taking the lead and protected their advantage until half-time.

The Central African Republic returned for the second half determined to get back into the game and were rewarded only a few minutes after the restart, levelling the score.

However, their response was short-lived. Dawda Camara restored Mauritania’s lead in the 69th minute, giving the side fresh momentum.

The Central African Republic continued to search for a second equaliser but could not find one. Instead, Mauritania added a third goal towards the end of normal time, with substitute Mamadou Diallo finding the net in the 89th minute.

The 3-1 win gives the Mourabitounes an ideal start to their bid to qualify for CAN 2027.

Mauritania will face the Guepards of Benin on 29 September, while the Fauves du Bas-Oubangui will take on Burkina Faso’s Etalons.
