Juan Mata is to stay at Manchester United having signed a new deal to remain at Old Trafford until June 2021.

The deal, which includes an option to extend by a further year, puts an end to speculation over the player's future with his United contract having been due to expire at the end of this month.

I know that Juan's vast experience will help them to reach their potential over the coming seasons.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

With Ander Herrera set to leave this summer and Antonio Valencia also out of contract, United were keen to avoid the prospect of Mata leaving on a free transfer.

With manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set to make changes to the playing squad ahead of the new season, he was nevertheless keen to retain the services of Mata.

The United boss said: "Juan is the ultimate professional and one of the most intelligent players I have worked with. He is a great example to our younger players in his approach.

"He understands what it means to be a Manchester United player and has embraced everything about this great club.

"As well as everything he brings on the pitch, we have some fantastic young players here and I know that Juan's vast experience will help them to reach their potential over the coming seasons."

Mata has been at Old Trafford since his move from Chelsea in January 2014. He has played 218 times for United, scoring 45 goals.

Last season in what was a disappointing campaign for United, he made 32 appearances in all competitions.

Solskjaer, who replaced Jose Mourinho in December, was unable to guide the side into the top four and they ended up in sixth spot in the Premier League, qualifying for next season's Europa League rather than having Champions League football back at Old Trafford.

United start the new Premier League season at home to Chelsea on 11th August and are 6/5 for the win with managerless Chelsea 21/10 and the draw 5/2.

United are 1/1 to finish in the top four next season with Arsenal 5/4.
