Mariners sign Scottish defender
Central Coast have snapped up Scottish defender Ziggy Gordon while they are close to making on a decision on whether to sign two South Korean trialists.
The Mariners, who have finished bottom of the A-League table in three of the last four seasons, have brought in former Scotland Under-19 international Gordon on a one-year deal.
He is so far the only non-Australasian player on the Gosford club's books, although that could change in the next few days.
Coach Alen Stajcic unveiled 26-year-old Gordon as his latest signing after the full-back's proposed move to Dinamo Bucharest fell through. Gordon had been released following a second spell at Hamilton Academical, where he had also started his career.
Stajcic said of his latest recruit: "He has played abroad in Poland at a high level, been a leader in the Scottish Premier League for Hamilton and, to bring in someone with that wealth of experience is going to be a great boost to our line-up. He is a natural leader and holds high standards for himself and those around him.
"Ziggy is a very smart footballer and his leadership qualities will be invaluable to our young boys and help the team move up the ladder this season."
Gordon, who will arrive on the Central Coast to start training next week, said he had had a lot of interest from clubs in Poland, England and Scotland.
He said: "After speaking with Alen about two months ago, I really liked the person that he was. From the first conversation we had, I thought he was a really honest and legitimate person who I could trust right away."
The Mariners still have Korean pair Kim Eun-sun and Lee Sang-ho on trial, with Stajcic saying he had been impressed with them so far.
The coach said he was hoping to sign one more foreigner by the end of next week which, if the two Koreans also join the club, would bring Central Coast to their limit of five visa players.
Central Coast are 33/1 to win the 2020 Grand Final.
