Manchester United tracking Calvin Bassey as January transfer interest grows
Manchester United are monitoring Fulham defender Calvin Bassey as they consider adding to their central defensive options before the January transfer window.
The Nigeria international is also being watched by Premier League rivals Everton and Newcastle United, while European clubs Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are reportedly interested in the former Ajax player.
Bassey, 26, has impressed during a strong individual season with Fulham and has reportedly attracted the attention of Manchester United’s recruitment department. His consistent performances have stood out despite Fulham’s mixed results.
United’s interest comes after a difficult spell in which they conceded seven goals across their past two competitive matches. They were beaten 4-1 by Como in the Champions League before suffering a 3-0 Premier League defeat by Bournemouth.
Those results have increased focus on the club’s defensive strength and raised questions about Manchester United’s longer-term plans at centre-back under manager Michael Carrick.
Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are continuing to develop, while Harry Maguire will turn 34 in March and is entering the final year of his contract. Lisandro Martinez is also approaching the final year of his deal, and Matthijs de Ligt has only recently returned after an extended injury absence.
Bassey’s contract at Fulham is due to expire at the end of the season. However, the London club hold an option to extend the agreement by another 12 months.
That situation could affect Fulham’s negotiating position and may give interested clubs the chance to pursue the defender for a reduced transfer fee, depending on how the contractual discussions develop.
According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United are among a number of clubs assessing Bassey’s position. The reported interest from Premier League and European sides could lead to a competitive contest for his signature.
Bassey joined Fulham after previously playing for Ajax and has established himself as one of the club’s notable performers this season. With his contract situation unresolved and several teams monitoring developments, his future is expected to be a significant transfer issue before the January window.
