Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has emerged as Manchester United’s leading candidate to replace Michael Carrick if the club decides to dismiss their current head coach, according to The Sun.

Manchester United’s hierarchy is still backing Carrick despite the team’s difficult start to the season. The club have lost four of their nine matches so far, but Hurzeler is understood to be among the main contenders should a change be made at Old Trafford.

The 33-year-old German has been in charge of Brighton since 2024. During his tenure, the club have finished eighth in the Premier League in two successive seasons.

Hurzeler extended his Brighton contract in June until 2029. Any move for the manager would therefore require Manchester United to pay compensation to the club.

Antonio Conte, Kieran McKenna and Eddie Howe have also previously been mentioned as potential candidates for the Manchester United job.
