Manchester City v Coventry: hosts forecast to make it three Premier League wins
Manchester City are expected to continue their perfect start to the Premier League season when they host newly promoted Coventry on 5 September, with a 3-0 home victory the predicted outcome.
The match will be played in the third round of the new campaign, with Manchester City facing a Coventry side that has only recently secured promotion from the Championship. Bookmakers are strongly favouring the home team, while the available form suggests a difficult afternoon for Frank Lampard’s visitors.
Manchester City have won both of their opening Premier League fixtures, although their victories have not been entirely straightforward. They began with a 2-1 home success against Bournemouth, but the hosts were behind until the 84th minute before completing the comeback.
Enzo Maresca’s side then produced a more convincing performance away from home, beating Crystal Palace 4-1. Manchester City scored three times in the second half to turn the match into a comfortable victory and underline their attacking threat.
Those results followed a heavy defeat by Arsenal in the FA Community Shield, when Manchester City lost 3-0. However, the response in the Premier League has been immediate, with six points from six available.
Coventry have endured a much tougher return to the top flight. Lampard’s team were beaten 3-0 by Arsenal in their opening game before losing 1-0 to Hull City in the second round.
Coventry were regarded as the favourites for the meeting with Hull City, but they were unable to convert that expectation into a result. Despite showing an entertaining style during their time in the Championship, they have yet to score in the Premier League this season and sit near the bottom of the table.
The contrast between the two teams is also reflected in their recent records. Manchester City have recorded four victories in their past five matches, while Coventry have lost two of their last three games.
There is a substantial history between the clubs, with Manchester City and Coventry having met 73 times. Manchester City have won 34 of those fixtures, compared with 21 victories for Coventry, while the remaining 18 matches have ended in draws.
The scale of the previous meetings provides further context ahead of the latest contest, although the clubs now arrive at different points in their respective campaigns. Manchester City have begun with back-to-back league wins, while Coventry are still searching for both their first point and their first goal after promotion.
Manchester City are therefore expected to control the game and claim another three points at home. The visitors may make parts of the match competitive, but the prediction is for the hosts’ greater quality to tell over 90 minutes.
The forecast is a 3-0 win for Manchester City.
