Manchester City keep pressing for Jennifer Echegini deal before transfer deadline

Manchester City are continuing their efforts to sign Nigeria midfielder Jennifer Echegini from Paris Saint-Germain before the Women’s Super League transfer window closes tonight.

The WSL champions have already seen several offers rejected by the French club, but remain determined to reach an agreement for the 25-year-old.

According to Guardian Sport women’s football writer Tom Garry, City are still working to complete a deal for Echegini despite PSG’s resistance. The French side are keen to retain the player, who has one year left on her current contract.

Echegini has become an important member of the PSG squad since joining the club in 2024. Her performances have attracted continued interest from England, where she spent part of her youth career with Charlton Athletic, Millwall and Arsenal.

The Nigeria international also has previous experience in senior English football before moving abroad. She spent one season with Juventus prior to her switch to PSG, scoring 10 goals in 16 appearances for the Italian club.

She was involved for PSG on Wednesday evening as they recorded a 5-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in a UEFA Women’s Champions League play-off tie. Echegini provided an assist in the emphatic victory.

City’s pursuit comes as the club look to strengthen their squad before the domestic transfer deadline. However, any move depends on PSG agreeing to release a player they regard as an important part of their team, with Echegini still under contract for another year.

The midfielder’s career has developed across England, Italy and France. After beginning her youth career in England, she spent a season with Juventus and made a significant contribution during her time in Turin before joining PSG.

Her latest appearance for the French club underlined her continued involvement in the team, but City’s interest has not diminished. Several proposals have been turned down already, leaving the two clubs with limited time to find a resolution before the WSL window shuts.

Echegini’s form for Juventus, where she scored 10 times in 16 games, helped establish her reputation before her move to Paris. Since arriving at PSG in 2024, she has further strengthened her standing as a Nigeria international and a key player at club level.

With the deadline approaching, City are still pushing to conclude negotiations, while PSG continue to seek the midfielder’s retention.
