Lingard misses late chance in Wembley stalemate
England and Germany played out a 0-0 draw in an international friendly at Wembley.
England had a good chance in the opening moments when Jamie Vardy got to the byline and cut a pass across the six-yard box, but debutant Tammy Abraham couldn't get a toe to the ball.
Leroy Sane went close five minutes later when his shot hit the sidenetting, and he was desperately unlucky in the 20th minute when his curling effort from the edge of the box hit the underside of the crossbar but bounced down back into play.
And the Manchester City midfielder should have scored moments later. Timo Werner broke through and saw his shot superbly kept out by Jordan Pickford. But the loose ball fell to Sane, who steadied himself before beating the goalkeeper -- only to see Phil Jones head off the line.
England then lost Jones to injury, Liverpool's Joe Gomez coming on in his place for his debut.
Werner was through on goal again six minutes before the break after being played onside by Danny Rose, but again Pickford produced a fine stop low down to his right.
Abraham was then inches away from breaking the deadlock as his shot deflected off Antonio Rudiger and went inches wide of the post.
Vardy then almost opened the scoring early in the second half, but his downward header was well scooped out by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
There were few notable openings in the rest of the half -- until deep into stoppage to time when Jesse Lingard lifted a shot over the bar from six yards out from a set-piece, and he should have won it.
