In a joint press conference on Thursday, la Liga President Javier Tebas and LigaMX President Mikel Arriola announced that the two leagues had reached a collaboration agreement to foster the growth of both competitions through an exchange of know-how and analysis.
While not going into too much detail, Arriola and Tebas touched on some topics such as women football development, financial cost containment, marketing and sponsorship deals, expanding league reach through digitalization and use of social networks, fighting sexism and racism in football, among others.
Tebas declared that "Mexico is vital as a place of strategic importance; there are millions of La Liga fans in Mexico and we need to be close to them as much as we can, not only through traditional media like TV, but also through the use of social networks"
Mikel Arreola, for his part, said that while LigaMX is in the top 10 of all leagues in the World, they need to do a better job attracting new fans, as La Liga has almost four times the number of fans that LigaMX has. To this end, one of the focal points of the agreement regards the sale of LigaMX TV rights abroad, as Arriola reaffirmed his intentions of transforming LigaMX in an international brand; in Mexico currently every team owns their TV rights individually, while if they were to be sold as a package deal that could grow profits exponentially for the league.
