Adam le Fondre is back on top of the A-League's golden boot standings after scoring in Sydney FC's 2-0 victory against Melbourne City.

The English forward grabbed his 12th goal of the season, taking him clear of Wellington Phoenix's Roy Krishna as the league's leading marksman.

He got on the scoresheet four minutes from the end as Sydney climbed back within a point of second-placed Melbourne Victory.

The Sky Blues also saw teenage forward Luke Ivanovic mark his first start with a goal against Warren Joyce's side, inside the opening 10 minutes.

City missed their big chance of the game when Riley McGree's second-half penalty was saved.

Sydney keeper Andrew Redmayne produced his fourth penalty save of the season, with the spot-kick awarded when Milos Ninkovic pulled the shirt of Bart Schenkeveld.

The Sky Blues didn't make the game safe until late on, having failed to do so midway through the second half when debutant Mitch Austin missed an open goal.

Austin latched onto the rebound after City keeper Eugene Galekovic had kept out a Le Fondre effort, but struck the post with his shot.

Steve Corica's side, who beat the visitors for the eighth time in a row, went ahead when 18-year-old Ivanovic took a pass from Ninkovic before finishing clinically from inside the area.

It was a big early boost for the Sky Blues, who were depleted of five key players and rested new star signing Reza Ghoochannejhad.

Ivanovic, playing instead of him, took advantage of poor marking to find room for a shot that put them ahead.

The youngster was forced off after half an hour by a hamstring injury, giving Austin his Sky Blues bow.

Rostyn Griffiths arrowed a shot toward the top corner that brought the save of the game from Redmayne after the break, before le Fondre took the ball on for the clinching goal and found the gap to end a four-game scoring drought.

The Sky Blues are 4/6 to win their next game against Brisbane Roar, who are 15/4, with the draw 3/1.
