LAFC progress in US Open Cup
LAFC overcame a seventh minute goal from Valeri Qazaishvili as they defeated the visiting San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 in the Fifth Round of the US Open Cup.
Diego Rossi, Adama Diomande and Carlos Vela were on target for the hosts, with the latter scoring in his seventh consecutive match.
The former Arsenal and long-time Real Sociedad player has been on fire and is a huge part of LAFC leading the Western Conference in the MLS this season.
With the win LAFC moves on to the quarter-finals where they will take on the Portland Timbers on July 10th.
The Timbers crushed the LA Galaxy 4-0 in the Fifth Round after edging past the Seattle Sounders 2-1 in the Fourth.
With either Minnesota United FC, who knocked out the holders the Houston Dynamo, or USL side New Mexico United awaiting in the semi-finals, both LAFC and the Timbers have a real incentive to win their Quarterfinal match up.
In the top half of the US Open Cup bracket Orlando City SC and New York City FC will meet in one quarter-final, while the upstart Saint Louis FC take on Atlanta United FC in the other. Like Minnesota vs. New Mexico and LAFC against Portland the games will also be played on July 10th.
Saturday the MLS teams return their attention to regular league play with five games on the slate.
None of the top six sides in the Eastern Conference take to the field, but seventh-placed Toronto FC will be in Texas to take on FC Dallas.
Meanwhile in the Western Conference the second placed Galaxy travel to Cincinnati to face the Eastern Conference cellar-dwelling FC Cincinnati.
