Former Adelaide United coach Marco Kurz has been unveiled as the new man in charge at Melbourne Victory.

The 50-year-old German, who guided United to FFA Cup success last year, was let go by the club at the end of the season.

His team had only missed out on a place in the Grand Final when they lost to Perth Glory in a penalty shoot-out.

I have got to know Melbourne Victory from afar and had tremendous respect for them during that time, so it is exciting.

Marco Kurz

Kurz won 49 per cent of his games in charge of Adelaide over two seasons, but left after saying he and the club did not have a shared vision for the future.

Victory chose him as their successor to Kevin Muscat, who left at the end of last season.

The club made the appointment on the advice of a technical panel that included former Socceroo Mark Bresciano.

Club chairman Anthony Di Pietro said: "Coupled with his international and domestic experience, Marco demonstrated outstanding qualities throughout. Importantly, his passion for success and desire to win is aligned with our club's ambition."

Kurz, who will start his new job within a fortnight, previously coached FC Kaiserslautern, 1860 Munich and Fortuna Dusseldorf.

He said: "It's an honour to be named as head coach of Melbourne Victory, a big club with a strong history, passionate fan base and true drive for success.

"I have got to know Melbourne Victory from afar and had tremendous respect for them during that time, so it is exciting.

"During the interview process we had aligned beliefs about the direction forward, which was very important."

Victory have lost a crop of players since the end of last season, including Japanese marquee Keisuke Honda, German defender Georg Niedermeier and Spanish midfielder Raul Baena.

Melbourne Victory are 5/1 to win the 2020 Grand Final.
