Klopp questions season start date
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes the football season in England starts too early and players need more rest over the summer months.
The Reds are preparing for Sunday's Community Shield encounter with Premier League champions Manchester City but there will have been little rest for some of his top players.
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker and striker Roberto Firmino both helped Brazil win the Copa America over the summer, while forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane featured in the African Cup of Nations.
With other top leagues in Europe not starting until the backend of August, Klopp has questioned the practice of beginning the season so early in England.
"I spoke to [Napoli manager] Carlo Ancelotti," said Klopp. "Italy has 20 teams as well [like the Premier League] and starts its season on 24 August.
"Kalidou Koulibaly played with Sadio (Mane) at the African Cup of Nations. He has four weeks holiday and is not even close to coming back.
"I don't know why we start that early. The Premier League is such a wonderful product. It doesn't make sense."
Liverpool are 14/5 to win, 11/4 to draw and 10/11 to lose to Man City on Sunday.
