Robbie Keane has been offered the assistant manager's job at Middlesbrough, who are set to appoint Jonathan Woodgate as their new boss.

Keane says he would only accept the role if it didn't impact his position with the Republic of Ireland, where he's currently part of Mick McCarthy's backroom team.

Irelands' record international goalscorer said he held talks with the club this week and will now take time to consider his next move.

It's attracting me now because they're very open to me going there.

After a 2-0 win over Gibraltar in Dublin on Monday, Ireland are top of Group D with ten points from four games in their bid to qualify for Euro 2020.

"I've been asked," Keane said. "They want me to come in as assistant manager, to help. So it's up to me to think about it really. But it won't affect me here [with Ireland], which was key for me.

"I spoke to Mick about it, told him and I said that under no circumstances would I take it if I had to leave here.

"It's been so busy that last few days with the games we've had that I haven't even spoken to my wife about it really."

Keane and Woodgate were teammates at Leeds United in their playing days and the former striker says that Middlesbrough appeals to him as a club with 'good values'.

"I wouldn't have taken the job if Mick or the FAI said 'we don't want you do it, we want you to stay here and you can only do this' – I wouldn't have taken the job," he added.

"It's attracting me now because they're very open to me going there. And listen, most of our players are in the Championship so you're going to be seeing them every week anyway."

Middlesbrough are 14/1 to win the Championship next season and 4/1 to earn promotion.
