Kansas City win on the road
It has not been a good year for Sporting Kansas City and they came in to Sunday's match against the Columbus Crew in last place in the Western Conference and having been knocked out of the US Open Cup.
As such, a 1-0 victory over the Crew was a welcome result for Kansas City. Felipe Gutierrez scored with a header from close range in the 48th minute, nicely assisted by Gerson, and Columbus were unable to rally.
The Crew's task was made more difficult later in the second half when Harrison Afful was handed a straight red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity to Gerso, pulling down the forward from Guinea-Bissau just outside the area.
The win moves Sporting Kansas City off the foot of the Western Conference and up to ninth in the standings, tied with the San Jose Earthquakes and ahead of the Vancouver Whitecaps, the Portland Timbers and the Colorado Rapids. That's one win, two draws and a couple of defeats for Sporting Kansas City in their last five games, including the heavy 4-1 defeat to Minnesota United in the US Open Cup.
Columbus, 40/1 to win the MLS Cup, will look to return to the win column in their next game this weekend when they welcome in Orlando City.
The Crew are winless in their last four MLS outings, but did pick up a victory over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the US Open Cup before losing to Atlanta United in the fifth round of the competition.
