Western Sydney look to have missed out on strike target Tomi Juric, with the Australia international reportedly staying in Europe.

Wanderers head coach Markus Babbel had hoped to lure the 28-year-old back to the club for the new A-League season, having worked with Juric for two years at Swiss club Luzern, during a spell when the striker netted 15 times in 57 games.

Luzern released him at the end of last season and Wanderers had held talks with him after he became a free agent.

Juric enjoyed a career highlight during his previous two-year spell with Western Sydney, when he scored the only goal in their 2014 Asian Cup Final victory over Al-Hilal.

He has won 41 Socceroos caps and helped them win the 2015 Asian Cup on home soil, when his cross was converted by James Troisi for the winning goal in extra-time against South Korea.

After Western Sydney released him at the end of the 2014-15 season, he moved to Dutch club Roda JC and then joined Luzern in 2016.

Juric was not Wanderers' only transfer target as they are also interested in 33-year-old Turkish striker Mehmet Akyuz. Reports suggest Akyuz has been negotiating a $1.6million contract with Wanderers.

Western Sydney are 12/1 to win the A-League Grand Final, while Wanderers are 25/1 to lift the FFA Cup.

Meanwhile, Brisbane Roar have signed hometown talent Rahmat Akbari on a two-year contract ahead of the new A-League season.

Akbari returned to the club last month after the end of his one-year loan with Melbourne Victory, where he made nine appearances.
