Southampton midfielder Joe Aribo has emphasized the team's determination to remain in the English Premier League, despite their current struggles at the bottom of the table, writes Nigeriasoccernet.com.
The Saints, who have managed just nine points in 24 games, secured a crucial away victory against Ipswich Town on Saturday, with Paul Onuachu’s 87th-minute winner sealing a 2-1 triumph.
Aribo, who opened the scoring, played a key role in the victory, ensuring a double Nigerian impact in the match.
Aribo on Southampton’s Survival Fight
Speaking after the game, the former Rangers midfielder stressed the importance of teamwork and resilience in their bid to avoid relegation.
“For us, it’s an amazing feeling—really important to get that result. We knew how big this game was, and we had to fight. You saw us fighting, and it was just amazing to get that result.”
“It shows the character of the boys, how together we are, and how much we’re willing to fight for each other. We can’t do this individually; we’ve got to fight together, and that’s the mindset we need for the upcoming games.”
Aribo also highlighted his commitment to the club’s survival effort, stating he is willing to adapt to any role if necessary.
“I’m more than willing to do anything to get us over the line. If I have to play in a position I’m not familiar with, I’ll do it to the best of my ability.”
Praise for Onuachu’s Late Heroics
The Super Eagles star also acknowledged Paul Onuachu’s late goal, which sealed the much-needed three points for Ivan Juri?’s side.
“The late winner from Onuachu was a massive relief. I was playing at left centre-back, and as I ran over to celebrate, I was trying to sprint, but I had nothing left in my legs—I was just jogging with my hands out. It was an amazing feeling.”
What’s Next for Southampton?
The Saints will now shift focus to their FA Cup fourth-round clash against Burnley on Saturday, before returning to Premier League action against Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth.
With the season nearing its climax, Southampton will need consistent performances to climb out of the relegation zone and maintain their top-flight status.
