Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus scored a goal before being sent off as Brazil beat Peru 3-1 on Sunday to win the Copa America for a ninth time.
Jesus also set up Everton to open the scoring in the 15th minute only for Peru to equalise just before the interval when Paolo Guerrero scored from the penalty spot after Thiago Silva was adjudged to have handled the ball.
Jesus, who restored Brazil's lead after the break, was sent off with 20 minutes left when he fouled Carlos Zambrano and was shown a second yellow card.
Peru failed to take advantage though and Everton striker Richarlison scored Brazil's third goal in the last minute from the penalty spot.
"I want to apologise," Jesus said afterwards. "I could have avoided it [the red card] and I also need to grow up a lot."
Meanwhile, Peru coach Ricardo Gareca accepted that the better team had won the final, saying: "It was fair that Brazil won. We had our momentum but the second goal...
"They took advantage of their opportunities.
"We came here hoping to win but they were very effective. But looking beyond the pain of the defeat, I think we are on the right path, that is the feeling that I have."
Brazil are 11/2 to win World Cup 2022 outright, while Peru can be backed at 250/1 and defending champions France at 7/1.
