Zaidu Sanusi Faces Two-Month Layoff After Porto Injury
Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi is expected to spend around two months on the sidelines after medical tests confirmed an adductor injury to his right leg, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.
Sanusi sustained the injury during Porto’s 3-0 victory over Académico de Viseu on Saturday and was forced off in the 17th minute after hurting himself while attempting to play the ball. Despite receiving treatment, the 29-year-old could not continue, with Martim Fernandes replacing him.
Tests conducted on Sunday confirmed the extent of the injury, with Portuguese publication O Jogo reporting that Sanusi is unlikely to return until after the next international break.
Porto had earlier confirmed that the Nigerian international was added to the club’s medical report and would undergo further examinations. Head coach Francesco Farioli also expressed concern immediately after the match.
“Zaidu’s looks like something very serious, and Jan seems to have twisted his knee. We’ll see,” Farioli said, according to OneFootball.
The setback is a significant blow for Sanusi, who had played every minute of Porto’s league campaign before the injury and remains an important part of Farioli’s plans despite entering the final year of his contract.
His expected two-month absence could also rule him out of Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin next month.
Sanusi’s injury came on a positive night for Porto, who maintained their perfect start to the league season with goals from Andre Silva, Gabri Veiga and William Gomes.
The victory was Porto’s fourth consecutive league win and leaves them top of the table with 12 points, two ahead of Sporting CP.
