Yves Bissouma deal carries risks for Ajax as work-permit wait goes on

Ajax may have taken a gamble by signing Yves Bissouma, according to De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij, although the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder does not appear to be earning a significant salary at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Bissouma has been described as a player with a history of disciplinary issues, but Verweij believes the move could still prove worthwhile for the Dutch club.

“I spoke to several people who had seen the pictures from his presentation and they wondered whether he had already caused trouble before. But that seems unlikely to me,” Verweij said on Kick-off, De Telegraaf’s football podcast.

“Everyone is entitled to make mistakes and deserves a second chance. In this particular case, perhaps even a third or fourth...”

Ajax had been looking to add another midfielder following the departure of Youri Regeer. Bissouma will compete for a place with Sofyan Amrabat and Jorthy Mokio, among others.

Verweij said Ajax had been able to complete the deal at a relatively low cost, partly because of Bissouma’s previous mistakes.

“I understand that Jordi Cruijff was able to sign him for a relatively low fee, partly because of a few mistakes on his part. His salary seems entirely reasonable,” Verweij added.

Ajax did not have to pay a transfer fee because Mali international Bissouma left Tottenham Hotspur this summer. He has signed a one-season contract, with the option of extending it for another year.

According to Verweij, Ajax are expected to activate that option once Bissouma has made a certain number of appearances.

“Normally, Ajax cannot go wrong with this transfer,” Verweij concluded.

Bissouma was unavailable for Ajax’s Eredivisie match against Excelsior on Saturday, which ended in a 2-2 draw. He is still waiting for his work permit.
