Valencia set to appoint Javier Aguirre after Carlos Corberan dismissal

Valencia are close to appointing Javier Aguirre as their new head coach after Carlos Corberan was sacked by chief executive Ron Gourlay.

Corberan’s dismissal forms part of a wider restructuring of Valencia’s sporting department, with the club under significant financial pressure.

The former West Brom manager joined Valencia in December 2024 and helped guide the club to an unlikely survival at the end of an extraordinary second half to the 2024/25 campaign.

He then took Los Che to the verge of a surprise European qualification place last season, although they ultimately fell short.

That progress was not sustained at the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign, when a run of results increased pressure on Corberan and Valencia’s position became more difficult amid their financial problems.

According to Mundo Deportivo, an agreement has been reached for Aguirre to take charge on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

The 67-year-old left his position as Mexico manager after the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is now set to return to club management in Spain.

Aguirre has previously managed Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and Mallorca in the country.

His immediate task at Valencia will be to move the club clear of relegation danger.
