Smicer says Liverpool must not let Florian Wirtz join Bayern Munich

Former Liverpool player Vladimir Smicer says he would not sell Florian Wirtz to Bayern Munich, amid discussion over the midfielder’s possible departure from the Merseyside club.

“I would not sell Wirtz to Bayern,” Smicer said.

The former Czech Republic international believes expectations surrounding Wirtz have become excessive because of the substantial fee Liverpool paid for him.

“People expect too much from Wirtz because he cost so much money, and that is the problem,” Smicer said.

He compared the situation with the pressure Paul Pogba faced after joining Manchester United. Pogba’s high transfer fee also led to heightened expectations, according to Smicer.

Liverpool signed Wirtz in 2025 for 125 million euros. The 23-year-old midfielder has made six appearances in all competitions this season and has provided one assist.

Wirtz has previously said: “I want to decide the outcomes of matches.”
