Simeone Set to Hand Lookman Bigger Role After Impressive Pre-Season Form
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman is expected to play a leading role in Atlético Madrid's attack this season, with head coach Diego Simeone and his coaching staff anticipating even greater performances from the Nigerian international, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Lookman underlined his importance by scoring twice within five minutes during Atlético Madrid's emphatic 4-1 victory over Getafe in the club's opening pre-season friendly.
According to Spanish outlet AS, the former Atalanta star made 24 appearances for Atlético after joining during the winter transfer window, registering nine goals and four assists.
His impressive return meant he averaged a goal every 153 minutes, a superior record to teammates Julián Álvarez and Antoine Griezmann. Including assists, Lookman contributed to a goal every 106 minutes, the best ratio in Atlético's squad during the 2025/26 campaign.
The coaching staff believes the Nigerian can build on those numbers this season and have been encouraged by his performances since the start of pre-season preparations.
Within the dressing room, there is growing confidence in the 28-year-old's development, with teammates and coaches impressed by his sharpness and commitment.
