Sergio Carpanesi, Fiorentina’s 1956 Scudetto winner, dies aged 90

Sergio Carpanesi, the former Fiorentina midfielder who helped the club win the first Scudetto in its history, has died at the age of 90.

Carpanesi was born in 1936, before the Second World War, and became an Italian champion with Fiorentina in 1956. It was the first of the club’s two Serie A titles, with the second secured in 1969.

Fiorentina reached the Coppa Italia final in 1958 but were beaten. Carpanesi left the club a year later to join Palermo.

He subsequently played for SPAL and Roma, winning the Coppa Italia with the latter in 1964.

Carpanesi ended his playing career in 1972 at the age of 36. He later moved into coaching but stopped working in football in the late 1990s.
