Rennes held by Sturm Graz in tense Europa League stalemate

Stade Rennais were held to a goalless draw by Sturm Graz in a fiercely contested but chance-poor Europa League meeting.

Neither side could find a way through as the match became a largely tactical and physical battle in midfield. Both teams struggled to produce the quality needed in the final third, with imprecision in the decisive moments preventing either from claiming victory.

Stade Rennais enjoyed a slight territorial advantage and put together several promising periods of possession, but they were unable to build enough momentum to seriously test the Sturm Graz goalkeeper. Their control of the ball rarely translated into clear openings, and the French side lacked the cutting edge required to break the deadlock.

Sturm Graz sought to disrupt their opponents with an aggressive press, while also looking to move forward quickly on the counter-attack. However, the Austrian side repeatedly let themselves down with poor execution in dangerous areas. Their attacking efforts lost effectiveness once they reached the final third, allowing Stade Rennais to deal with most of the threat.

The 0-0 result leaves neither team fully satisfied in their Europa League group. Stade Rennais avoided defeat away from home and return with a point that could prove useful in the standings, but their cautious performance offered little reassurance.

Both sides will need to show a more assertive approach in the next matchday if they are to make a stronger start to their European campaign.
