Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona meet at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday in a tie between the Champions League’s top two teams, with both clubs arriving in prolific form.

The fixture has become one of European football’s defining contests over the past decade. Its most famous meeting came in 2017, when Barcelona overturned a 4-0 first-leg defeat in an extraordinary remontada.

Luis Enrique, who masterminded that comeback, is now Paris Saint-Germain’s first-team head coach. He has also overseen victories against his former club in their past two meetings, although only Bayern Munich have won three successive matches against Barcelona in either format of the competition.

Tuesday’s game will be the 17th between PSG and Barca, matching the record for the fixture. Each club has won six of the previous 16 encounters, while four ended in draws.

Bayern Munich remain PSG’s most frequent opponents in the European Cup and Champions League, having met 17 times. The French side have won seven of those games, drawn one and lost nine.

The latest meeting brings together two of the game’s outstanding talents in Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembele, who are both continuing to challenge records. Ferran Torres, a World Cup-winning goalscorer who moved to Paris after the World Cup final, will also have an almost immediate opportunity to face his former team-mates.

Attackers set to dominate

Barcelona have scored 39 goals in nine LaLiga matches and added nine in their two Champions League fixtures. PSG have scored 10 goals in their two European matches in 2026/27, taking them above Barcelona on that measure, including a 4-2 win at Man City.

Champions League matches involving either side have produced 264 goals since the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign. During Hansi Flick’s time in charge, Barcelona games in the competition have featured 130 goals, with only PSG recording more over the same period, at 134.

The previous 16 meetings between the clubs produced 57 goals. Among ties played at least 10 times in the European Cup or Champions League, only Ajax v Bayern Munich has a higher average than PSG v Barcelona’s 3.8 goals per game, with that fixture averaging 3.9.

PSG are unbeaten in 12 Champions League matches following their victory at City, one short of their club record. They have also won their past six games in all competitions after a slow start to the 26/27 campaign.

Barcelona’s form is arguably even stronger, making this PSG’s biggest examination of the season. Flick’s side will also have taken note of how PSG dismantled Enzo Maresca’s Man City team.

Paris Saint-Germain must guard against attacks from every area rather than focusing solely on Yamal. If he supplies two assists, he would join Raul as the only player to provide at least two in three consecutive Champions League matches.

Barcelona have scored four or more goals in four successive league or group-phase matches, the longest run in European Cup or Champions League history. Flick has the competition’s best scoring rate among Barcelona managers with at least five games, at 3.0 goals per game, but also the worst defensive record at 1.6 goals conceded per game.

Raphinha is expected to start, with both teams close to full strength. Victory would not secure progress to the next round, but it would establish either side as the team to beat.
