Nigeria need two wins against Tanzania to secure AFCON qualification
Nigeria face Tanzania in a decisive 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header during the November international break, with Eric Chelle’s side needing maximum points to confirm their place at the tournament.
The Super Eagles were left in a vulnerable position after their unexpected defeat by Guinea-Bissau in September. Tanzania are only two points behind Nigeria in Group L, meaning any further slip could leave the qualification race uncomfortably close.
The first meeting takes place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on 13 November, before the teams travel to Dar es Salaam for the return fixture on 17 November.
With the matches coming less than 100 hours apart, and involving travel across Africa for both teams, physical condition and match sharpness could prove significant. Nigeria will be targeting six points to avoid being drawn into a tense qualifying pathway.
Chukwueze absence forces attacking reshuffle
Chelle will have to adjust his attacking plans after Samuel Chukwueze was ruled out of both matches with a lingering hip injury.
The absence of Chukwueze removes one of Nigeria’s most direct attacking outlets and a source of unpredictability on the right flank. However, LASK forward Moses Usor is among those in contention to take on a greater role after scoring the decisive goal on his debut against Madagascar.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Nathan Tella also provides another option for the Nigeria manager as he looks to replace Chukwueze’s pace and attacking threat.
Victor Osimhen is expected to lead the line after overcoming a fitness scare at club level. Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi are also expected to retain their places as part of the experienced core of the team.
Tanzania expected to defend deep
Tanzania manager Miguel Gamondi is expected to depend on an experienced, battle-tested group as the Taifa Stars attempt to take points from the two fixtures.
The visitors could adopt a compact defensive approach in Uyo, with veteran forward Mbwana Samatta likely to be their main threat on the counter-attack. Nigeria will need patience and discipline to break down a stubborn Tanzania defence while avoiding the errors the Taifa Stars will look to exploit.
The two results will have a major bearing on the qualifying picture. Two victories would leave Nigeria with their route to Morocco for AFCON effectively secured, while anything less could intensify scrutiny around the Super Eagles.
Tanzania’s proximity to Nigeria in Group L means the opening match is particularly important. A win in Uyo would give Nigeria early control of the double-header, but the return fixture in Dar es Salaam is expected to present a more demanding challenge.
