Morocco start Women’s Under-17 World Cup with emphatic win over New Zealand
Morocco began their FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup 2026 campaign in commanding fashion, beating New Zealand 4-0 in the opening match at the Complexe Mohammed VI de football in Sale on Saturday.
The hosts produced a strong statement in their first game of the tournament, with all four goals coming after half-time as Youness Rabie’s side overwhelmed their opponents.
Sonia Abajiou, who plays for Frankfurt, opened the scoring in the 57th minute. She finished from a pass by Hiba Youssoufi of AS FAR Rabat after Morocco had applied sustained pressure.
Morocco doubled their advantage 13 minutes later when New Zealand defender Eden Chaytor inadvertently turned Nessma Mouradi’s effort into her own net. Mouradi plays for Paris FC.
The hosts continued to dominate and added a third goal in the 76th minute. Imane Dhissi of Borussia Monchengladbach converted after being set up by Aya Ait Khouya Mouh, who plays for PSG.
Youssoufi completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute to give Morocco a convincing opening victory.
The result puts Morocco at the top of Group A on goal difference. Germany had earlier defeated Argentina 2-1, leaving the hosts level on three points with the European side but ahead after their more decisive win.
Morocco will face Germany in their second group match next Tuesday. A second successive victory would confirm their place in the last 16.
The tournament format allows the top two teams from each group to progress to the knockout stage, along with the four best third-placed sides.
