Liverpool stand firm on Florian Wirtz despite Bayern Munich interest

Liverpool are not prepared to consider January offers for Florian Wirtz, despite the Germany international’s difficult start to life at Anfield and reported interest from Bayern Munich.

Wirtz joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last summer in a transfer understood to be worth £100m. However, the 23-year-old has so far struggled to justify that fee, with his performances failing to reach the level expected after his move to Merseyside.

He has scored seven goals in 54 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions and is increasingly appearing short of confidence. His form has prompted speculation that Bayern Munich could explore the possibility of taking him back to the Bundesliga.

German sources say Bayern Munich are monitoring Wirtz’s situation closely. The German club could consider a move for the midfielder if Liverpool were willing to discuss his departure.

Liverpool, though, remain fully committed to retaining Wirtz and helping him rediscover his best form. The latest indication is that the player and the club want to continue working together rather than pursue a January transfer.

Wirtz’s representatives have reportedly spoken with Bayern Munich to make clear that his current preference is to remain at Liverpool.

The midfielder’s camp and the club are understood to be aligned in trying to reverse his fortunes at Anfield. Andoni Iraola is confident that Wirtz can return to his top level through that combined effort.

Wirtz’s first year and a half at Liverpool has therefore been viewed as a period of adjustment rather than the end of his time at the club. Despite his limited goal return and concerns over his confidence, Liverpool’s current stance is that he will not be made available during the January transfer window.
