Kerkez faces fresh threats after leaving Hungary camp for Serbia
Liverpool and Hungary defender Milos Kerkez has been threatened by Hungarian supporters after he was spotted attending an amateur match in Serbia.
The incident is the latest in a series of controversies involving the 21-year-old, who was previously targeted by Ukrainian users on social media following the first Nations League meeting between Hungary and Ukraine.
Kerkez was involved in a confrontation during that match. Afterwards, his father posted a photograph accompanied by Russian music, prompting a hostile reaction from Ukrainians. Both the player and his father subsequently received threats online.
Kerkez missed the return fixture against Ukraine because of suspension. He left the Hungary camp before that game, but did not return to Liverpool. Instead, he travelled to Serbia, the country where he was born.
He was later seen at an amateur football match in Serbia, leading to threats from Hungarian fans. According to Goal, those threats were partly linked to the strained relationship between Serbs and Hungarians.
Hungary’s foreign minister, Anita Orban, has condemned the threats made against Kerkez.
Despite being born in Serbia, Kerkez represents Hungary because of a promise he made to his Hungarian grandmother.
