Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has settled his outstanding debt with the UK tax authority, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), preventing him from being declared bankrupt.

On Tuesday, 13 October, judge Nicholas Briggs dismissed a bankruptcy petition against the 48-year-old after a representative of HMRC confirmed in court that the debt had been paid. The exact amount owed was not disclosed during the hearing.

The bankruptcy petition was submitted in August. Earlier reports suggested Carragher’s tax debt could have been about £750,000, equivalent to approximately $1m.

Carragher spent his entire playing career with Liverpool, making 737 appearances for the club.

He now works as a football pundit for Sky Sports and CBS.
