Gudmundsson completes Lazio comeback to beat Udinese in Serie A

Lazio came from behind to secure a third-round victory over Udinese, with Albert Gudmundsson scoring late to give the Rome club all three points.

The match at Udinese’s home ground began with little to excite the supporters. Both teams created opportunities during the opening half, but neither side produced many chances that seriously threatened to break the deadlock.

The first 45 minutes therefore ended without a goal, leaving the contest finely balanced at the interval. Udinese and Lazio had shown enough attacking intent to suggest that the game could open up after the break, but the quality and danger in the final third had been limited.

That changed shortly after half-time, when Udinese took the lead. Keinan Davis supplied the pass for Jesper Karlstrom, who finished the move by finding the target.

Lazio were then forced to respond, having fallen behind in a match in which clear opportunities had been scarce. The visitors increased the pressure as they looked to overturn the deficit and avoid leaving Udinese with all three points.

Their efforts were rewarded in the 75th minute. Mattia Zaccagni provided the assist for Davide Frattesi, who scored to bring Lazio level.

The equaliser changed the momentum of the match and gave Lazio the opportunity to complete the turnaround. The visitors continued to pursue a winning goal in the closing stages, while Udinese attempted to protect the point that appeared to be within reach.

Lazio eventually found the decisive breakthrough late in the game. Albert Gudmundsson scored to complete the comeback and give the visitors a victory after they had initially fallen behind.

The result leaves Udinese with four points from their opening three matches. Lazio, meanwhile, have made a perfect start to the campaign, taking nine points from three games.

For Udinese, the defeat means their unbeaten points total remains at four after the first three rounds. Lazio’s three victories place them on the maximum available tally, following a match in which they had to recover from Karlstrom’s second-half opener before Frattesi and Gudmundsson turned the contest in their favour.

The opening period had offered little indication of the drama to come, with the two teams unable to convert their early possibilities into a breakthrough. But the game took on a different character after the interval: Udinese moved ahead, Lazio responded with an equaliser 15 minutes from full time, and Gudmundsson settled the contest in the closing stages.

Lazio’s ability to recover from a losing position proved decisive, while Udinese were left without reward after having led shortly after half-time.
