Anthony Gordon says a phone call from Barcelona manager Hansi Flick convinced him that his £80M move from Newcastle United was genuinely going to happen.

The England international completed his transfer to the Catalan giants ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June and has made a promising start to life at the club.

Gordon is yet to score for Barcelona, but he has provided four assists and played in all six of their matches so far in the 2026/27 season.

His determination to join Barcelona has attracted attention in both the UK and Spain. Gordon has described the move as a dream he had always believed he could achieve, although he has also admitted there was a point when he doubted the deal would be completed.

His departure from Newcastle United was considered a risk at the time, while Gordon acknowledged that he too had concerns the transfer might collapse.

“For a while, I didn't believe the Barcelona deal was real. I told my agent: yea, yea, OK,” Gordon said.

“I didn't show much interest because I didn't think it was serious. Then I had a phone call with Hansi Flick, that's when I knew it was real!”
