Rivers United technical adviser Finidi George criticised Rangers International’s approach in the closing stages of their 1–1 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) draw at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday.

The result left Rivers United top of the NPFL standings on goal difference, with Rangers remaining in second as both title rivals took a point from a tense contest.

Rivers United made the stronger start and controlled the pace of the match from the opening whistle. Their early pressure produced the breakthrough in the 17th minute, when striker Chijioke Mbaoma took advantage of an opening in the Rangers defence to put the hosts ahead.

The Pride of Rivers held on to their lead until half-time, but Rangers responded positively after the interval. Godwin Obaje equalised in the 53rd minute with a precise finish after another lapse in the home side’s backline.

Both teams pushed for a winning goal during a physical and closely fought second half. Neither side was able to find a further breakthrough, however, as disciplined defending at both ends ensured the points were shared.

After the match, Finidi, the former Super Eagles head coach, expressed his frustration with the way he felt Rangers managed the final stages of the game.

“They got a draw and they should not complain,” Finidi said during his post-match interview.

“You saw the way the players were falling down as if they are not fit, but I wasn’t pleased with their time-wasting tactics.”

The draw extended Rivers United’s position at the summit, while Rangers continued to apply pressure in second place.
