Everton v Man Utd: Carrick targets repeat success in Moyes reunion

Michael Carrick will meet his former manager David Moyes in opposite dugouts as Manchester United travel to Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium for their third Premier League match of the 2026-27 season.

Moyes managed Carrick for about 10 months after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013. The pair will now face each other for the third time in the new campaign, with Carrick looking to guide his side to another victory over the Everton boss.

Carrick’s most recent meeting with Moyes came during his spell as Manchester United’s interim head coach. United won that game 1-0, with Benjamin Sesko scoring the decisive goal.

The former midfielder has taken charge of one victory and one defeat since being appointed Manchester United’s full-time manager. However, his side will arrive on Merseyside with confidence after producing a convincing 5-2 win over Ipswich in their previous fixture.

Moyes, meanwhile, will be eager to respond after a difficult conclusion to the summer transfer window. The Everton manager has only one unavailable player for this match, with Christian Norgaard sidelined.

Jack Grealish could feature in an Everton shirt for the second time since returning to the club on loan from Manchester City. His arrival was viewed as a positive development after what had otherwise been a gloomy deadline day for Everton.

Sesko is unlikely to start for Manchester United despite scoring the winner in the previous meeting between the teams. The striker has only recently recovered from an injury that ruled him out for most of the summer and the opening part of the season.

Manchester United also have several other fitness concerns. Mason Mount and Amad Diallo are doubts because of knocks, while Carlos Baleba will have to wait for his debut after suffering an ankle injury.

Matthijs de Ligt remains unavailable because of the back problem he sustained last season. Manuel Ugarte is facing a longer absence after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during the summer, while goalkeeper Tom Heaton is out with an abdominal injury.

The fixture has also produced plenty of goals in recent years. Everton and Manchester United have not drawn 0-0 in any of their past 24 meetings.
