Eto’o’s 20-assist landmark under threat from Salah and Hakimi
Samuel Eto’o remains the leading African provider of assists in Champions League history, but Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi are now just one behind the former Cameroon international.
Eto’o has recorded 20 assists in the competition, while Egypt forward Salah and Morocco defender Hakimi have each supplied 19. The gap leaves both players within reach of a record held by one of the continent’s most celebrated footballers.
The Champions League has provided a stage for many of Africa’s finest players, with their influence measured not only by goals but also by the chances they create for team-mates. In that regard, Eto’o continues to set the standard, although the current standings suggest his lead could soon disappear.
Eto’o leads the way
Eto’o’s 20 assists place him at the top of the all-time list for African players in the tournament. The former striker made a major impact during spells with FC Barcelona and Inter Milan, winning the competition with both clubs.
His movement, awareness and ability to unsettle opposing defences helped establish him as one of the leading African figures in European football. Those qualities also allowed him to contribute regularly to goals created by his team-mates, rather than relying solely on his own finishing.
Salah is level with Hakimi on 19 assists and has continued to combine his goalscoring threat with a significant creative contribution for Liverpool. The Egypt international is widely recognised for his finishing, but his ability to create chances and put team-mates in scoring positions has also been an important part of his game.
His consistency at the highest level of European football has kept him close to Eto’o’s mark and leaves him with a clear opportunity to move into first place.
Hakimi’s total underlines the attacking value of modern full-backs. The Morocco defender regularly advances down his flank and is capable of delivering dangerous crosses, adding an important creative dimension to his defensive responsibilities.
His 19 Champions League assists match Salah’s tally and highlight the influence he has had in the attacking phase. Hakimi’s contribution extends beyond his work without the ball, with his forward runs making him a consistent source of opportunities for his side.
Record remains within reach
With only one assist separating the leader from his two closest challengers, the African ranking remains open. Salah and Hakimi can both still overtake Eto’o, who currently retains his position as the continent’s leading assist provider in the competition.
The three players represent different forms of attacking influence. Eto’o’s instinct in the final third, Salah’s creativity from an advanced position and Hakimi’s ability to drive forward from defence have all shaped their Champions League records.
The contest will continue in future European campaigns, when Salah and Hakimi will have further opportunities to close the gap and potentially move beyond Eto’o’s total.
