Ethan Nwaneri loan deal gives Arsenal January return option

London club Arsenal have the option to bring 19-year-old midfielder Ethan Nwaneri back from his loan at Borussia Dortmund on 1 January, according to Sky Sport.

The provision was included in the loan agreement at Arsenal’s request and was not subject to negotiation, the report says. It gives the Gunners the right to decide whether Nwaneri should return to the club before the end of his spell in Germany.

However, Arsenal would have to accept a financial consequence if they exercise the clause. Borussia Dortmund would not be required to pay a loan fee for Nwaneri, while the Bundesliga club would be given sufficient time to find a replacement for the midfielder.

The reported arrangement means the decision rests with Arsenal, rather than requiring agreement between the two clubs. Sky Sport has not indicated that Arsenal have made a final decision on whether to activate the option.

Nwaneri’s current contract with Arsenal runs until June 2030. The midfielder is valued at 35m euros by Transfermarkt.

At 19, Nwaneri remains under a long-term agreement with the London club, despite his temporary move to Borussia Dortmund. The January clause provides Arsenal with a route to reassess that arrangement during the season, while also allowing Dortmund time to plan for the possibility of his departure.

If the option is used, the German club would lose Nwaneri without paying the agreed loan fee. If Arsenal leave the clause unactivated, the midfielder’s loan spell at Borussia Dortmund can continue under the existing arrangement.

The reported terms underline Arsenal’s control over the player’s immediate future. Nwaneri’s contract length and Transfermarkt valuation also reflect the significance attached to the midfielder, whose deal with Arsenal does not expire until the summer of 2030.

For Borussia Dortmund, the inclusion of the 1 January provision means the club has been given advance notice of a possible change. Should Arsenal recall Nwaneri, Dortmund would have time to identify a replacement rather than losing the player without warning later in the campaign.
