Edo Queens have received a massive N50 million cash reward from the Edo State Government following their historic triumph at the 2026 WAFU B Women’s Champions League, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo announced the reward on Tuesday during a special reception held in honour of the champions in Benin City.

The victorious squad returned to Edo to a hero’s welcome after their impressive campaign in Burkina Faso, with the players and officials first taking part in a victory parade from Airport Road to Osadebe Avenue.

The team was later received by Governor Okpebholo, who praised the players for their resilience, determination and fighting spirit.

The governor said he had remained confident that Edo Queens would overcome Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the final despite the earlier meeting between the two teams.

“If you had won the first match against Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Ghana, they would have defeated you in the final,” the governor said.

“I was very confident that our girls would make us proud, as this cup means a lot to our people.”

Okpebholo also reflected on the dramatic penalty shootout that ultimately decided the final, singling out the goalkeeper for praise after her crucial save.

“That brilliant save gave us the energy and confidence we needed. I could see the Ghanaian players beginning to lose confidence and become emotional. At that point, I knew we had the advantage,” he added.

The governor further pledged sustained government backing for the team and promised to provide more opportunities for the players to develop their careers.

“As a government, we will continue to support and reward the team and create more opportunities for them to excel,” he said.

Edo Queens defeated Ampem Darkoa Ladies 4-1 on penalties in Sunday night’s final in Ouagadougou after the encounter ended 2-2 following regulation time.

The victory secured Edo Queens’ qualification as the WAFU B representatives at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.
