Como’s nine-goal record and Fenerbahce shock headline dramatic Champions League night
Como matched the modern UEFA Champions League record for goals in a single game with a 9-1 victory over Lens, while Fenerbahce ended Liverpool’s perfect start with a 3-2 comeback win in Istanbul on a dramatic Matchday 4 Wednesday.
Cesc Fabregas’ Como, playing in Europe for the first time, set a new competition record for the biggest away victory at Stade Bollaert-Delelis. Anastasios Douvikas scored a hat-trick, while Nico Paz, Lucas da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina and 18-year-old debutant Matteo Papaccioli were also on target. Ruben Aguilar scored Lens’ only goal.
The result matched Bayern Munich’s nine-goal victory against Dinamo Zagreb in 2024. It also equalled the biggest winning margin in Champions League history, matching Liverpool’s 8-0 win over Besiktas in 2007 and Real Madrid’s 8-0 victory against Malmo in 2015. Como have scored 19 goals in their four league-phase matches.
Real Madrid preserved their perfect record by recovering from behind to beat AEK Athens 3-2. Aboubakary Koita put the Greek side ahead before Jude Bellingham equalised. Stavros Pilios restored AEK’s lead, but Kylian Mbappe levelled late on and Federico Valverde completed the comeback with a stoppage-time winner.
Liverpool’s unbeaten start came to an end in Turkey, where Fenerbahce overturned two deficits to win 3-2. Trey Nyoni and Alexander Isak both gave Liverpool the lead, but Mason Greenwood, Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi scored for the home side to secure a memorable victory.
Manchester City also required a late goal to claim a 3-2 win at RB Leipzig. Castello Lukeba’s own goal and an Enzo Fernandez strike put City ahead on two occasions, only for Ridle Baku and Antonio Nusa to bring Leipzig level. Erling Haaland, who has a strong record against Leipzig, settled the match in the 78th minute.
Porto recorded another significant result by defeating Napoli 4-1 at the Estadio do Dragao. Jan Bednarek, Gabri Veiga and Jakub Kiwior scored before Samu Aghehowa converted a penalty, while Scott McTominay replied for Napoli.
Borussia Dortmund beat Real Betis 2-1 at home through goals from Fabio Silva and Konstantinos Karetsas, after Aitor Ruibal had equalised. Arsenal won 2-1 at Slavia Prague, with Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres scoring in the first half before a late Nowak goal proved insufficient.
Club Brugge earned a 2-1 away victory at PSV Eindhoven. Nicolo Tresoldi and Carlos Forbs scored for the visitors, with Keito Sano replying for PSV. Viking completed the night’s results with a comfortable 4-1 home win over Sabah.
The results left Como’s record display and Fenerbahce’s upset as the defining moments of the night, while Real Madrid and Manchester City maintained their perfect records. Arsenal, Porto and Dortmund also collected valuable points as the 2026/27 league phase continued.
