Chelsea have joined Manchester City and several other leading European clubs in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Mathis Albert, with the Premier League clubs reportedly prepared to consider a January offer of up to €20 million.

Albert, 17, is regarded as one of the most promising young players to emerge from the United States. He recently made his international debut under Mauricio Pochettino and has attracted increasing attention despite limited first-team opportunities in Germany.

The teenager has made one Bundesliga appearance for Borussia Dortmund so far this season. He came on as a substitute during Saturday's 0-0 draw with Union Berlin on October 17.

Football Transfers reports that Chelsea have now entered the competition for Albert, joining a group of major European clubs monitoring his situation.

Sky Germany has also reported that Borussia Dortmund are at risk of losing the winger because of his lack of playing time. Albert's limited involvement could encourage clubs to pursue a deal when the transfer window opens in January.

Albert was close to joining Paris St-Germain last summer, but that move did not happen. Chelsea and Manchester City are now understood to be willing to explore a deal worth as much as €20 million for the young American in January this year.
