Brandon Bokangu: Guingamp’s late-blooming Ligue 2 striker making a major impact

Brandon Bokangu’s route into professional football has been shaped by setbacks, hard work and persistence. Now the En Avant Guingamp forward is attracting attention in Ligue 2 after a strong run of scoring form. Here are three key points about the player’s journey and style.

A career built through adversity

Bokangu’s development has been far from straightforward. At the age of 17, after suffering several injuries, he was released by the Le Mans FC academy and had to restart his career in amateur football at Regional 3 level.

It was a particularly difficult period, but he continued to pursue his ambition of becoming a professional footballer. Away from the pitch, he worked in several jobs to earn a living, including delivering pizzas and preparing orders.

Those experiences gave him a stronger character and added to his determination to prove himself. Rather than abandoning his hopes, Bokangu used the setbacks as motivation to work his way back into the game.

A powerful forward with positional flexibility

Standing 1.81m tall, Bokangu combines pace and physical strength with the ability to attack space. Although he was originally developed as a midfielder, he has gradually moved into more advanced positions during his career.

His progress became particularly clear at Saumur, where he made an impression on the right wing. He then took another step forward with Paris 13 Atletico, finishing as National 2’s leading scorer.

At AS Nancy-Lorraine, Bokangu was used mainly through the middle as a centre-forward. That change of role underlined his ability to operate in different attacking positions and gave him further experience as a goalscorer.

Guingamp’s influential substitute

Bokangu joined En Avant Guingamp in the final moments of the summer transfer window on 1 September 2026. He has quickly repaid the club’s faith in him, scoring four goals in his last four Ligue 2 appearances.

Sylvain Ripoll has often used him as an impact substitute, bringing him on from the bench to change matches. The approach has produced clear results.

Bokangu most recently demonstrated his influence by scoring the goal that gave Guingamp a 2-1 victory over Annecy. He had also scored in the previous week’s match, extending his productive spell in front of goal.

His recent performances have made him one of the Breton club’s most effective attacking options, and a player whose rise has continued despite the difficult route he took to reach professional football.
