Barnsley FC Confirm Kelechi Nwakali Will Stay Beyond 2025/26 Season
League One side Barnsley FC have confirmed that Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali will remain at the club beyond the 2025/26 campaign, following the release of their retained and released list, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports
The decision sees Nwakali continue at Oakwell despite an uncertain period in his recent career, with the club opting to activate his contract option as part of their squad planning for the new season.
The former FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball winner had endured a mixed spell in England after initially making 26 appearances in his debut season, before later slipping out of favour under previous management.
At different stages, the midfielder was linked with a possible departure after being considered surplus to requirements, but a permanent exit did not materialise.
He later spent time with the development squad to maintain fitness and gradually worked his way back toward first-team involvement, featuring briefly in the closing stages of the season.
Despite earlier disciplinary concerns and limited playing time, Barnsley have now decided to retain the Nigerian international as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
