Ballon d’Or 2026 race intensifies as Kane, Yamal and Mbappe gather support

France Football’s 30-player shortlist has sparked a growing debate over who should win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe emerging as the leading contenders.

The award will be difficult to decide because few players maintained a consistently high level throughout the long 2025/26 season. The three favourites each have a strong case, but their campaigns were shaped by very different achievements and disappointments.

Mbappe finished as the leading scorer in three major competitions, yet ended the season without a trophy. Yamal enjoyed an outstanding club campaign with Barcelona and won the Spanish league title. He also lifted the World Cup with Spain, although an injury suffered before the tournament prevented him from making a significant impact.

Kane was arguably the most consistent of the three. The Bayern Munich striker scored 73 goals and claimed the Golden Boot, while also helping his club become champions of Germany. However, England finished only third at the 2026 World Cup.

Real Madrid and Barcelona campaign for their stars

The Ballon d’Or is also a source of prestige for clubs, and the most intense contest is once again between Real Madrid and Barcelona. In previous years, the rivalry centred on Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. This time, Real Madrid are backing Mbappe while Barcelona are promoting Yamal.

Their team-mates have repeatedly spoken in support of the two players. The clubs’ strategies appear clear: their senior figures have identified their preferred candidates and are seeking to raise their profiles through media coverage and social networks, which can have a major influence on the award.

Bayern Munich are naturally supporting Kane. Paris Saint-Germain, meanwhile, have chosen to promote two players: Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. However, their chances of winning this year’s award appear less convincing.

Players divided over the leading candidates

The debate has extended beyond supporters and analysts, with leading footballers also offering different views. Mbappe’s public position has evolved. He was initially cautious when discussing his chances, before making a more confident assessment following advice from people around him.

Yamal responded directly and, two days later, the 19-year-old Barcelona academy graduate made an even stronger case for himself. Kane, the third principal contender, adopted a more measured tone rather than endorsing either of his rivals.

There is also support for Messi to win a record ninth Ballon d’Or. The 39-year-old Argentina forward performed at the highest level at the most recent World Cup, set several records and guided Argentina to a second consecutive final. They could not repeat their success from four years earlier, though, and had to settle for silver.

Many assessments still identified Messi as the tournament’s best player. That view is shared by Argentina and Atletico de Madrid defender Cristian Romero.

Other endorsements include television presenter Dmitry Guberniev, who believes Barcelona midfielder Rodri Hernandez should win. The current holder, Ousmane Dembele, has named his Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as the world’s best player, while Kvaratskhelia has said he would vote for Dembele.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place in London on 26 October. France Football is expected to keep the voting result secret until the winner’s name is revealed from the envelope.
