Arthur Okonkwo sets sights on AFCON title and World Cup with Nigeria

Arthur Okonkwo says his ambitions with Nigeria extend beyond Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar, with the goalkeeper targeting both continental success and a place at the FIFA World Cup.

The 24-year-old could make his first competitive appearance for the Super Eagles when they face Madagascar’s Barea in the qualifier.

Okonkwo made his Nigeria debut against Zimbabwe’s Warriors at the Unity Cup in May. The Coventry City goalkeeper was subsequently included in the squad for international friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June.

The former Arsenal academy goalkeeper is now hoping to help Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations and establish himself as part of the team’s plans for the World Cup.

“I want to win the AFCON and compete at the World Cup. That’s one of my biggest ambitions as a footballer,” Okonkwo said during his interaction with the media in Uyo on Wednesday.

Nigeria are three-time African champions, but Okonkwo’s immediate focus is on continuing his development within the squad and learning from the more experienced members of the team.

He said his previous camp had been a valuable experience as he continues to adapt to international football.

“At the moment, it’s still early. I want to learn from everyone and learn new things. The previous camp was good for me,” he added.

Okonkwo also underlined his determination to make a meaningful contribution to the Super Eagles as he progresses.

“I want to take things in my stride, keep learning, keep improving, and hopefully one day contribute positively to the Super Eagles.”
