Nigeria forward Tolu Arokodare says he is still below full fitness as the Super Eagles prepare for their crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

The striker has been affected by the lingering physical effects of a recent bout of fever and is working to recover his strength and match sharpness before the two fixtures.

Arokodare made the admission after returning to action, explaining that the move back into full training had proved more difficult than expected.

“You could see after five or six minutes that I was hunched over because I was tired. I needed this match to realise that I am not yet 100 percent fit. I still feel weak,” he told AjaxLife.

The forward said he had hoped to start the match but recognised that his condition would not have allowed him to do so.

“I haven’t recovered as much as I thought. I wanted to start, but I don’t think I could have. We had a tactical training session in the morning and my legs were weak. I was dead after five or six minutes into the match,” he added.

Despite the difficulties, Arokodare was pleased to have been introduced during the game and remains hopeful that the international break will give him enough time to regain full fitness.

“I am happy that I was able to come on, though. Hopefully, I will recover fully during the international break,” he said.

Fitness decision for Super Eagles

The 24-year-old’s condition presents a minor concern for the Super Eagles coaching staff as they manage the squad ahead of the demanding double-header.

Nigeria have important qualification points at stake against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, leaving the technical crew with a decision to make over Arokodare’s involvement.

It remains to be seen whether he will be considered fit enough to lead the attack or whether he will be managed from the bench. His fitness and ability to contribute could therefore influence Nigeria’s tactical plans for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
