Ajibade says scans are ongoing after ankle injury in Comoros qualifier
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade says she is “doing okay” as medical assessments continue on the ankle injury she suffered during Nigeria’s 2028 Olympic Games qualifier against Comoros.
The 26-year-old was substituted in the 23rd minute of the home fixture after colliding with an opponent. Folashade Ijamilusi replaced the Paris Saint-Germain forward.
Reports had suggested Ajibade might require surgery, which could have kept her out of action for an extended period. However, the Nigeria captain said no decision had been made as scans and consultations with medical professionals were still taking place.
Ajibade addressed her condition in a message on X, while also thanking her team-mates, staff and supporters for their backing.
“Another international break has come to an end, and I’m grateful,” she wrote.
“It is an honour to lead this group of women. I am proud of how our team began its road to the Olympics, and of the unity, discipline and fight each player brought to the national team.
“I also want to address the incident that happened to me during the second leg against Comoros. Scans and medical consultations are ongoing, and more updates will be shared when available.
“At the moment, I’m doing okay and my spirits are high.
“To everyone who reached out with messages, prayers and kind words, thank you from the bottom of my heart. To my teammates, family, technical and medical staff, and our fans, I felt every bit of your love and support.
“For now, my focus is on recovery and returning stronger for club and country.”
Ajibade’s statement provides some reassurance regarding her immediate condition, but the seriousness of the injury and the likely length of her absence will not be known until the remaining medical assessments have been completed.
The captain said she was proud of the way the Super Falcons had started their route towards the Olympics, highlighting the unity, discipline and determination shown by the squad during the international break.
She also expressed gratitude to those who had contacted her with messages, prayers and words of support, including her team-mates, family, technical and medical staff, and Nigeria’s fans.
Further information on Ajibade’s injury is expected once the scans and medical consultations have concluded.
