Impact edge visiting Timbers
The Montreal Impact were led by two goals from Orji Okwonkwo as they defeated the Portland Timbers 2-1 at Saputo Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Okwonkwo finished well on the break in the first half to give the Impact the lead and, after Tomas Conechny had equalized with a header from a free-kick for Portland, provided a highlight reel second by swivelling well in the penalty area to beat Jeff Attinella in the Timbers net.
There was some question as to why the Portland defence stood off the young Nigerian, but there was no doubting the quality of the shot.
Montreal moved to within two points of the Philadelphia Union atop the Eastern Conference with the victory, although the Impact have played one more game than the leaders.
The Union were held to a 1-1 draw by the New England Revolution in Foxboro as Philadelphia failed to take advantage of their match up against the Conference strugglers.
DC United, 14/1 to win the MLS Cup, is level on points with Montreal, but in third due to games won being the tiebreaker in MLS.
Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game against Orlando City on Wednesday with an audacious shot from within his own half.
The former Everton and Manchester United star astutely saw Brian Rowe well off his line and out of his box during an Orlando attack and when the ball came to the striker his 70-yard shot flew over the keeper's head and into the Orlando net.
